I apologise if you were expecting an answer to this great unanswerable question. I purely wanted to share with you, my new purchase!
I have wanted a writing desk for a long time but have never had the money to purchase one (the ones I seem to like are well into the £100s).
I have wanted a writing desk for a long time but have never had the money to purchase one (the ones I seem to like are well into the £100s).
So, I gave up on the idea. Not only was the expense so great but space was an issue too. My living room/dining area is filled with pets (a guinea pig, a snake and a fish tank), about seven million children's toys and two book cases full of hardbacks (all the paperbacks were demoted to the cupboard under the stairs!).
Many of you probably know, that since my daughter, Autumn was born on the 31st December last year, my writing has kind of taken a back seat. When I do have any spare time I use it to sleep but I have managed to get a few bits done - my picture book, 'Doodeedoo' is out later this year through Visionary Press and my adult noir novella, 'Dick' is being read for podcast by the well respected author, Alex S. Johnson (you can check out my interview with him on my author interview page).
The writing desk idea kind of got pushed under the carpet and I went about my daily life of full-time working, part-time nappy changing and occasional washing up until I saw a writing desk on the great website preloved.com. It was cheap and looked a good quality and I wanted it. Unfortunately, you have to be a member of the site to contact a seller before their product has been on the site for less than ten days and , although it's only a fiver, I didn't like the principle of it.

So, although that writing desk had to be put on the backburner for eight more days, my interest in purchasing one had been ignited once again. I searched the internet but found the same problem as previously - cost. Now where could I find what I wanted for not a lot of money? I decided to check out the charity shops and low and behold, the first one I tried, Sue Ryder, had two! They were pretty poor quality but my wife is somewhat of a DIY expert so I parted with my hard earned £15 with a closing comment from a grey haired shop assistant, 'Well, that's a bit old isn't it?' Speak for yourself love, I thought but didn't say.
To be fair, she was correct, there was a layer of dust inside which may have come from the prehistoric era. I was well aware that it wasn't great but two things decided me on the purchase. One - the cost, obviously. Two - it's a bookcase as well which would solve the issue with space.
So, I made myself a cup of tea in my favourite mug, peeled back the silver wrapping of one of my many Easter eggs and sent Sammy outside with the sander and a paintbrush.

I tried on many occasions to help - replacing the hinges and locks but my practical mind has been on holiday for the past week so all I managed to do was make random holes which my wife needed to sand again and fill before repositioning. It took her all afternoon and I think she has done a marvellous job. Love you Miss Gilbert, thank you!
